1. What is a pellet?

Pellets are small packets formed by processed ingredients and are used for making snacks, usually by frying or expansion in ovens. Palmex offers pellets made of wheat, corn, potato and multigrain, among other types.

2. What is the shelf life of a pellet?

The shelf life of our pellets is about 15 months when kept in optimal storage conditions.

3. When the pellet is fried, what is the shelf life?

Once the product is fried, about 14 weeks. However, shelf life depends on many variables such as packaging film quality, oil used, room temperature, weather, and humidity, among other factors.

4. What are the storage conditions that pellets require in order to maintain their quality and freshness?

Optimal storage conditions for pellets are a dry place, protected from sunlight, with temperature between 15-25°C (59-77ºF) and humidity between 30-65%. .

5. What is the pellets’ yield when fried?

Because of the oil absorption during frying, 20 – 25% weight can be gained.

6. What is the pellets’ moisture?

 

 

Average raw pellet moisture = 10% - 12%
Average fried pellet moisture = 1.5% - 2.5%


7. What about the Bulk Density (B/D)?

It is the weight of a given product’s volume (weight per unit volume) and is expressed in grams per liter, pounds per cubic foot, etc. Bulk Density is the determinant parameter for bag filling of pellets after frying.


8. How many different types of products does Palmex offer?


We are constantly creating new ítems, innovating on a daily basis. You can select over more than 30 different types of pellets; wheat, potato, corn, rice, soy multigrain, low carb, veggies, among others. You can combine your orders with our variety of Breakfast Cereals.


9. What packaging systems does Palmex use?


Depending on the product, Palmex packages them either in cardboard boxes or in paper bags (sacks). In the former case, Palmex places the pellets in polyethylene bags inside the boxes. In the latter case, kraft paper bags with an internal polyethylene liner are employed.


10. What does the weight amount shown mean?


The weight of a box or sack depends on the specific weight of the pellet in it. Weight may range from 14 to 20 kgs, (33 to 44 lbs) depending on the type of products packed. A code identifying the production batch is stamped on every box and sack.


11. What is the Pellets' oil absorption?


Most fried snack pellets have oil content between 20% and 30%, while regular potato chips normally have oil content above 35%.
When snack pellets are expanded in an oven, the oil content is normally limited to between 5% and 10% .


12. What types of flavors/seasoning can be added to the pellet?


It mainly depends on your own taste or the flavors preferred in each region. As a snack, it can be used with a variety of flavors and seasonings like barbecue, cheese, chili powder, sour onion, garlic, cinnamon, and sugar, among others.


They can also be enjoyed with different flavored dips such as bean, sour cream, hot sauce, avocado/guacamole, just to mention some of them.

15. What is the volume of the product after being fried?


Depending on the product, average bulk density will change to about 12 times its original volume once fried.
This means that 1-liter of pellets would yield approximately 12 times its volume.

20. How much time does it take to receive the product?


It depends on several factors such as destination, type of transportation used, and payment arrangements. Usually orders arrive 10 to 15 days after being approved.
